Living bread came down from heaven

The reading on Sunday is taken from part of John's Gospel (John 6: 41-51) known as the "Bread of Life Discourse".  This is the long conversation between Jesus and the people, in which Jesus tries to answer the people's questions and  teach his disciples about who he is, where he has come from and how they can get to heaven.  Jesus says:
I am the living bread that came down from heaven;

whoever eats this bread will live forever;
and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world

Something to talk about:
The mention of heaven in this week's gospel would be a good time to talk to others about their ideas of heaven, and to remember family and friends who may have died.  As those who lead children's liturgy know, there is much to be learned from talking to children about their vision of heaven.
A prayer for those who have died:
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.  May they rest in peace. Amen
