The 2nd Sunday of Easter - is also the final day of the Easter Octave. For the eight days of the Easter octave we are asked to celebrate the resurrection. It is like a week of Sundays!
In 2000 Pope John Paul II recognised the day as Divine Mercy Sunday. It is where we remember that God is merciful. Pope John Paul II wanted to encourage the faithful in devotion to Divine Mercy - he therefore granted a plenary and a partial indulgence. The Apostolic Penitentiary Decree gives more details about what this means.
One of the conditions of gaining an indulgence is to go to Sacramental Confession - at Lancaster Cathedral from 2.00pm there will be priests hearing confession and devotions held in honour of Divine Mercy, including exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.
This year, Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII who will both be canonised (made saints) on Sunday 27th April, Divine Mercy Sunday.
