Fr Andrew Dawson

Fr Andrew Dawson

Fr Andrew after a busy weekend at the end of his first week at the Cathedral. In last weeks newsletter Fr Andrew introduced himself and shared something of his journey from his first visit to Lancaster as a student 25 years ago to his return as Assistant Priest at the Cathedral Parish of St Peter and St Thomas More.  He writes:

25 years ago, almost to the very day, I first came to live in Lancaster. Then I was a new student at the University, arriving from a medium sized market town, just to the North of London, as that institution was drawing its 25th anniversary year to a close. Time marches on, and the University has, as you will know, been celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. In the meantime I completed my studies; did a year’s voluntary work in Manchester; worked in retail for a few years; and then joined the l’Arche community in Preston, where I lived and worked in Christian community with others, some of whom have a learning disability.  [Hopefully there will be a chance to share more news of the L'Arche community in the weeks ahead].It was from L'Arche  that my discernment led me to apply to the diocese to see whether God wanted me to be a priest

Many of you will remember my time with you on placement in the summer of 2006 – I remember it fondly, myself, and I was delighted therefore, when it was suggested that my ordination should be at the Cathedral. Whilst we don't have a photo of Fr Andrew's placement, we do have a couple from the original Cathedral blog.

Vespers

Bishop O'Donoghue and Fr Robert Billing
First, when he was ordained Deacon (above) and another when he visited a few weeks before his ordination to attend vespers (left). He is sat to the right of Bishop Jarrett, while our own deacon, Jim Wood, is nearest the camera.
I was made most welcome and the memory of that day in November 2008 will, of course, be with me always. Again courtesy of our original blog, an image from that wonderful day, when Fr Andrew was giving 'first blessings' following his ordination Mass.

Now I find myself returning to Lancaster, this time at the Bishop’s bidding. Some things have not changed (the traffic and one way system, for example) other things will have, and I know that there will be a lot for me to learn. The life of the Cathedral and St Thomas More’s is sure to be different from my previous parishes (most recently Holy Trinity and St George, Kendal) but I look forward to meeting everyone and being eased (gently I hope!) into life in a new environment.

A warm welcome to Fr Andrew, who as asked that we introduce ourselves and if necessary to repeat our names.
