Art and Faith 3

This Sunday we hear about Jesus chasing out the money lenders and the people who were using the temple to sell their sheep and doves.  This painting shows a range of people puzzled by what Jesus says and does.  Quentin Matsys, “Jesus Chasing the Merchants from the Temple,” 16th century.  The gospel scene took place in the temple, but the painting here represents the church of the time, with the commentator suggesting that maybe Matsys was suggesting that the people of his time may need to reflect on whether they were remembering to treat the house of God with reverence.
