Tintoretto, “Christ Washing the Disciples’ Feet,” 1548–1549
In the Gospel of the Lord's Supper we hear the account of Jesus washing the disciples feet, normally the Bishop would wash the feet of members of the congregation, a reminder that like the disciples we too are called to follow Jesus' example to serve one another by following this new Commandment.
This is also the night when the Jesus celebrated the Last Supper. During the consecration it is worth listening out to the Bishop (or priest) who says that it was "the day before he was to suffer, which is today ...". This reminds us that we are journeying with Jesus and not merely remembering events from the past.
